45 miles of white sand and the sinuous landscape are Rio’s ultimate
appeals. They make the big, busy city unique. Brazilians
call it “Cidade Maravilhosa” or Marvelous City. Rio was the country’s
capital for almost 200 years, and in 1960 it was transferred to
Brasília. However, Rio is still a major cultural capital.
It gathers seven million Cariocas - as the locals are called. The
spectacular beauty of Rio is compelling. Built-up areas are nestled
between a magnificent bay, 23 gorgeous beaches, and a dazzling
mountain range covered with the world’s largest urban tropical forest.
By mistake, Portuguese colonizers named the land of natural
treasures as River of January (Rio de Janeiro), because when
the ships entered Guanabara Bay on January 1st, 1502, they
thought they were sailing up a river. The explorers would never
have guessed that this swamp region they neglected at first would
become the trendiest city in South America. It’s festive reputation
is not only proven during Carnaval, but all year around.
Although it is the second industrial and financial center in the
country, it is in the pursuit of leisure that Rio is outstanding. That’s
